A Distinguished Older Couple Came to La Garita Pistol Club last week…

Tom brought his own .45....

Tom brought his own .45….

There’s a funny thing about doing something a long time; how teaching  develops into a personal read for each student.  Years ago, as a certified NRA instructor, I used to teach basic Home  Defense.  There were often ten students in a class.  I made them safe and they shot well enough for the times.  But now my teaching is more organic and personal with one or two students at a time.

Brought her own .45 too.

Brought her own .45 too.

Take Tom and Carol for example; they had no pride to overcome, they just wanted to be able to defend themselves for these times. I’ve  been working with couples a lot since I started teaching again.  I show them  how to work together and make a dark and dreary subject fun. Sorry there aren’t more pictures.  We had a great 2 days; they took me to “Jalapenos”, a great Mexican restaurant in Alajuela and I taught them to Shoot.  We’re friends now, how cool is that?  Paul

“Self Defense is a Human Right”

The other day my daughter was helping me clean up my computer.  We decided to remove some pictures off my Picasa site.  Next thing I know, pictures were missing on my blog.  All this talk about privacy is somehow tied to how people feel about personal defense.  I’m happy to live in Costa Rica where my rights are respected.  I believe however, that I’ll be looking for a cloudless sky in the future and choose more wisely the company I build my next blog with.  Will keep you posted.  Paul

Two New Graduates!
(…but first; a word about our Brown Bag Special.  We teach the wisdom of “walking softly, and carrying a big stick.”  That is to say, we don’t show our friends and neighbors how cool we look with our new gat strapped to our leg. No bragging about how bad we are…in fact, we lean towards Eastern Martial Arts in the way we conduct ourselveshumble, respectful and caring
No fowl play here folks, every person who shoots at our range leaves his or her name, cedula or passport number and serial number of the gun used, even if it’s ours).
Two Cocks and a Chick
Every so often a couple comes along who start from scratch and enjoy every minute of their training.  These two seemed to have “Friend” pasted on their foreheads and indeed; we became friends.  It’s true after all, that Birds of a Feather Shoot together.  Meet the Brown Bagger Family, Martin and Kate.

I
t takes time to get proper form.  Form is developing the right posture, position and hand placement on the gun every time.  Repeated and gently corrected, it creates “muscle memory.”  People who’ve been shooting all their lives often have a harder time than new students like the Bagger family.  Bad habits are hard to break.  If you own a side arm, why not get some training to go with it?  We can make you safe, and very good indeed.

One way to keep your skills up is to attend our Last Sunday of the Month La Garita Pistol Club Gathering.
One such Gathering happened just yesterday, coincidentally the last Sunday of the month of August.  Here’s what happened….
There were 6 of us, three new graduates and a couple old timey shooters from up Texas way.  As usual, we didn’t get a lot of pictures because we were either shooting, moving or reloading!  The old esprit de corps was alive and well at La Garita Pistol Club yesterday.
Here’s a couple pictures.
 Next time join us!

Sometimes the advantages of left handers are over looked.  This is an attempted car jacking.

A bad day at the range is better than a good day fishing

July 28 Sunday Shoot
Right to left: Two Texans, Mostly Irishman and a Viking (hide the women)

I thought I’d get away cheap, fire a few rounds and go home, but no… we got into a real shoot out.  No one kept score but these guys shot very well and I had to pay attention to stay with them.  This kind of day is what La Garita Pistol Club is all about; camaraderie, good spirit and improving our game.  We had fun!
Those of you who have taken my courses   and others who  have come to shoot on

Last Sunday of The Month

Two More Graduates for La Garita Pistol Club
They chose the Brown Bag Special, (can’t blame them), so I thought I’d randomly find a picture…

Practicing Situational Awareness, really, there were only 2 of them…

They shot very well indeed; and I expect to see them on regular monthly gatherings.  Congratulations my friends!

Today is the day I catch up on this site.
Without further ado, let me present Natasha Quesada, our Psychologist and tireless companion on those days when police give exams.  She is always bright, positive and helpful with my students.  In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever met a more healthy psychologist in my life. She begins with a warm smile and solid eye contact throughout her exam.  Natasha speaks Spanish but she has an exam in English for learning expats and will often meet me with a client at Denny’s near the airport just to be helpful.  She may be reached at natyqe@hotmail.com
